There’s was one fella I knew, that decided he and his wife were going to retire on a fourty foot plus catamaran that he would build himself.  So, they sold their house, moved into an apartment, and rented out a barn.  For the next five years or so, he started spending all his weekends and evenings working on this boat.  I saw the vessel myself, when it was supposedly about a year away from completion.  There’s no doubt, this was an impressive vessel, and it was really interesting to see it in it’s partially completed state.  It was kind of like a cut-a-way of a really complicated machine.

When I was a young boy my family went on a camping trip together to Rocky Lake. Rocky Lake is a beautiful lake set in Northern Manitoba. It is locally know as a great fishing lake with an abundance of northern pike, walleye, tulibee, smallmouth bass and whitefish. It is also very close to the best rainbow/brook trout fly-fishing lakes in Manitoba, Barbe Lake. The lake only sees a couple hundred tourists per summer but there are cabins for rent for those that would rather not sleep in a tent. Fishing and boating on Rocky Lake is a cherished memory from my childhood.

Of course, North America is a big place so there are more than just one lake on which to boat and fish. In the past, when I spent time backpacking the United States, a much-loved fishing destination of mine was North Dakota. With 694 lakes I was always bound to find good fishing somewhere. I always found you couldn’t go wrong with a spin around Devils Lake, which is the largest natural body of water in the state. It is also widely known as the Perch capital of the world. My grandpa took me to Devils Lake one year and we stayed at a campground near the lake. It’s funny how so many of my childhood memories consist of fishing and boating with my family. Perhaps that is why as an adult I’m still so fond of spending my days on a boat, casting my fishing line into the clear waters of the lake.
