Protecting Your Eyes On The Open Water

Of all the things you need to have when your out sailing or boating on the open water, is a good pair of glasses. Preferably a pair of tinted or good sunglasses.  If you wear prescription glasses, you may want to get a second tinted pair for your boating time.  The sun can be pretty bright out on the lake, and being able to see what’s in front of you or coming up behind you can be critical.  Even for those out on the ocean, where there is usually not a lot of traffic good vision is essential to safe boating.  It’s not so much the other boats you have to be concerned with, as their size generally makes it impossible not to see them.  It’s all the little stuff floating around the water.

Logs, garbage, cargo containers, and other floating debris have been known to severely damage or sink many a boats.  It’s believed, that many of the ocean going boats that go missing every year, are the result of colliding with shipping containers, that just barely break the surface of the water.  Now it’s true, that spotting these hazards with perfect vision is a tricky proposition, picking them up with partial vision will be pretty much impossible.  A good pair of eyeglasses, could very well save both you, your vessel and your crew.
